Political talk is cheap, substance abuse programs are expensive, and the nature of the crisis demands fast action

Pain is the root of the opioid epidemic. When opioid use leads to addiction, solutions require political will and sophisticated mental health interventions.

In retrospect, we were an addicted nation waiting to happen. Not from a self-indulgent culture, not from an unwillingness to suffer hardship, nor any of the recent criticisms of generational lack of grit.

Physical pain is intertwined with safety, the base of Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs: pain trumps other problems.
